Roman mortars and the secret of the pozzolanic reaction
The article states this clearly in its conclusions: These findings reveal an incredibly sophisticated mastery of local geology from two millennia ago: the ability of craftsmen to recognize and selectively exploit small outcrops for specific uses, such as pozzolanic aggregates for mortars, demonstrates an impressive level of technical and territorial expertise. Paradoxically, this forces us to reevaluate our modern methods: despite our advanced technology and theoretical experience, contemporary practice has largely lost the deep, direct empirical knowledge of materials that ancient humans possessed.
